You can follow a series of branching puzzles in single-player puzzle mode, or go through a very silly plotline in story mode. This game is positively loaded with gameplay modes and options. There are also rainbow bubbles that assume the color of adjacent bubbles, star bubbles that pop all of a certain color, and special rocks that can only be destroyed from above. The coolest improvement is the pulley system where you have to deal with up to four clusters, adding and popping bubbles while taking counter-weighting into effect. Puzzle Bobble 4 adds some new gameplay twists into the mix, while maintaining the addictive fun of the first three games. Pop all of them, and you're on to the next stage - but don't take too long, or you'll be crushed by the clusters which are slowly falling from the ceiling. Using an odd contraption at the bottom of the screen, they must fire colored bubbles onto bubble clusters, placing three of the same color adjacent to each other. Puzzle Bobble 4 is the story of Bob and Bub, two dinosaurs in the land of monsters. And we're not talkin' about any Puzzle Bobble 4 here - after all, according to the box, this is "the most beautiful Puzzle Bobble 4 ever." Oh, yes. Damn.ĭespite the fact that I'm old and senile now, I finally have Puzzle Bobble 4 spinning in my Dreamcast. Sadly, the next week, the arcade manager had replaced Puzzle Bobble with The Super Spy. At this point I considered doing a spinning DDT on the helpless Puzzle Bobble addict from the top of the Tekken 2 machine, but decided to hold off.

And I just can't get enough of the game's vocal taunts - we're talking about dangerous amounts of cuteness here. The packaging claims it's "The most beautiful Puzzle Bobble yet!," and that's no lie. Graphically, the game looks very clean - the entire game has been redone in high resolution, and supports the VGA box to boot. This can create a massive chain reaction that turns the tables with spectacular results - and it brings the game's versus mode up to the level of Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo. The biggest addition are the new chain bubbles, which relocate destroyed bubbles to other locations in the puzzle. (My personal favorite is Debirun, who appears to be the offspring of Bub and Satan.) Each character features different counter-bubbles when playing in the game's versus modes, and have different tales in the story mode. The cast of Puzzle Bobble 4 features Bob and Bub from the original Bubble Bobble, along with a truckload of undeniably cute characters. After every few seconds, the clusters of bubbles start to drop - if they reach the bottom of the screen, it's game over for you, pal. If three bubbles of the same color are adjacent to each other, they pop, along with any bubbles that are hanging below. If you've never played Puzzle Bobble, the rules are simple: there are a bunch of multi-colored bubbles clustered together at the top of the screen, and you must pop them with your bubble-launching device.

Fortunately, all is well, and Puzzle Bobble 4 has already managed to start sucking away at my precious time ever since I cracked the shrinkwrap two hours ago. After the latest batch of botched ports ( Virtua Cop 2, cough cough), I was skeptical as to whether or not this WinCE-based conversion would be worth the GD it was printed on.
